Culinary School Scholarship
Though culinary schools are more specialized and less out-front than multi-curriculum colleges,
tuitions can still keep in line with what those other colleges charge. For this reason, aspiring chefs look
for ways to earn scholarships, just like any other students who want to offset the constantly rising costs of
tuition.
Earning a culinary school scholarship can be a bit trickier than earning scholarships from
non-specialized colleges. Being your senior class president, maintaining a steady 4.0 grade average and
belonging to several community clubs can help you get that scholarship to any college in which you’re
interested. A little more uniqueness may be warranted, however, to get the attention of culinary school
scholarship committees.
A culinary school scholarship will usually have something to do with your talent, passion or
dedication to the preparation, cooking and presentation of different kinds of foods. Most of the scholarships
out there for culinary schools are smaller ones, and students often apply for several of them in order to get
the most help with their tuitions.
Grade average and community and school participation does count when it comes to applying for
and being awarded a culinary school scholarship, but more specialized involvement is needed as well. It helps
to be working in the food industry, such as in the catering, restaurant or bakery business. Many larger
food-oriented businesses offer scholarships for students. Many foundations that are based on the food and
hospitality industry offer scholarships as well, and knowing who they are and what they are looking for in
scholarship potentials is helpful.
Here are examples of a few culinary scholarships and what they require:
James Beard Foundation Scholarship Program - In memory of famous chef
James Beard, several scholarships are awarded every year in his name. The scholarship committee looks at the
basic information on each applicant, such as GPA, community involvement, work history in the food industry and
the students’ financial situations.
Best Teen Chef - The Best Teen Chef competition is held every year, and it
isn’t just one contest, but several contests leading up to an ultimate final competition in Houston, Texas.
Competitions start as cook-offs in a variety of areas throughout the United States and Canada. $3000
scholarships are awarded to all the teen winners of these cook-offs; a respectable amount in itself. Winners of
the local competitions go to the finals, where one teen is awarded a full culinary school scholarship, and two
others are rewarded smaller scholarships. To be eligible to compete, students must submit an original recipe
along with an essay on why they want to study culinary arts at their chosen school.
The Culinary Trust - The Culinary Trust offers several scholarships in
different amounts each year to students who are interested in pursuing education in the culinary industry.
Requirements for being eligible for a scholarship from this foundation vary according to the intended course of
study, but include such things as food-service experience, 3.0 or higher grade point average and essays on why
the student is interested in pursuing this field of study.
Just as with any other collage, culinary school scholarships are out there
for students. It takes research and determination to find and apply for these scholarships, as well as a
sense of responsibility for meeting requirements.
